History

No: 85/87/89 The High Street.

A three story building with cellar built in 1704 (no: 89 rebuilt later) as a large mansion house for private use. The date 1704 appears on a rainwater head up on the roof and the building consisted of the present 85/87/89 High Street.

In 1777 the house was divided into 2 ownerships and the much of the structural division dates from that time. The front doorway is generally similar to 18 Market Street but with a less elaborate fanlight and was presumably central in the original building. The entrance hallway is per the re-organization of 1777 but the staircase is a rebuilding of the original one. The interior retains some of the early 18th century bolection-molded paneling and door cases.

In 1821 the premises where owned by a local banking family, Ledgard and George Ledgard, a ship owner and rope maker was heavily involved in trade in Newfoundland. In partnership with Martin Kemp-Welch, he founded the Poole Town & County Bank and also sponsored the building of the Church of St Paul in the High Street in 1833.

No: 85/87 was once Wilts & Dorset Bank then Lloyds Bank and the strong room (now empty) is still situated in the lower basement.

No: 89 part of the original building was in 1777 a general store and years later a branch of Courts and is now Yates Wine Lodge.

No: 87 was converted into Barfoots Brasserie in the mid 1980's and became La Plaza Brasserie in 1999.
